| Note: RMS makes these notes as a guide for this required installation settings for installing RMS on a Windows 2000/2003 Server with Windows Terminal Server used for terminal access. RMS take no responsibility for the information contained herein.
| This document is intended for use by a hardware technician who had reasonable knowledge of Windows 2000/2003 server and Terminal Services.
| Technical RMS setup assistance for terminal services is not available from the support desk; however our technicians may be available by appointment to answer any RMS/Terminal Services issues.
| Important Notes:
| Sufficient licences for Windows 2000/2003 Server AND Terminal services are required when setting up Terminal Access to the server. Please ensure that you have the required licences before beginning.
| Please refer to this link for specific licensing details - http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/pricing/tsfaq.asp
| Once Windows 2000/2003 Server has been installed you may then activate the Terminal Services logins.
| Terminal services should be setup to run in Application Mode and NOT Administration Mode.
| Each login should be set up with its own user name and password and be given a specific HOME directory for the storage of various setting files relative to that client login. This is important as RMS stores several files for that user.
| Testing:
| Set up the terminal services client software on one of the terminal computers and connect to the server. You should now see a desktop that is being generated from the server.
| You should now be able to access and run the programs in the start menu that are located on the server.
| Log Off this computer and move back to the server to begin software installation.
| Installing RMS and related software
| RMS requires the use of Microsoft Word 97 or later as it is used as a letter editor within RMS.
| You will need to install Word onto the Server BEFORE installing RMS:
| Be sure to use the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs when installing software onto the server.
| Using the client logon that you used to test the connection before, re test the connection ensuring that MSWord operates correctly. Then Log Off to continue software installation on the server.
| Version 8 of RMS requires the installation of MDAC 2.0 specifically for the Jet Database Drivers. Later version of MDAC do not contain these drives and so will not work, however you can install MDAC 2.0 first then update to a later version if necessary. MDAC 2.0 is available on the RMS installation CD or on our webpage in the download - RMS runtimes area.
| Use the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs to install MDAC.
| Now re run the Add/Remove programs to install the FULL version 8.8 (or later) onto the server. The FULL version can be found on the CD and is called fullinstall.exe
| Please leave the default installation path and program group unaltered as our support staff will find it difficult to locate RMS files etc if needed.
| Note: At the time of writing version 8.8 is the latest FULL version available.
| After installation is complete you are required to restart the server. Please do so now.
| After restart you now need to update RMS to the latest version. Repeat the installation process to install the latest version from the CD called rmsupgrade.exe
| Once installation is complete, you should be able to run RMS on the server.
| Please refer to steps 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 then continue below.
| Exit RMS.
| Login to the sever from the client computer. Execute C:\RMSWIN\RMS.EXE which should start up RMS. Test that you can Log On to the Main Menu.
| Note. There are two ways to execute RMS from the Terminals. Either create a shortcut icon to the RMS.EXE on the desktop of each client or run the client software to directly execute the RMS.EXE file. This option will not affect the running of RMS, but may be influenced if the property is running other software also through the terminal services system.
| TROUBLESHOOTING:
| The most common problems with running RMS over Terminal Services are usually issues of licensing and/or permissions.
| Please be certain to understand the licensing requirements and installation procedures before installing terminal services.
| RMS requires full access to the RMSWIN directory (and related sub directories) and to the users HOME or PROFILE directory (for the creation of temporary files). If you have any problem that would appear to be related to permissions try granting the user administrative rights as a test to prove this point.
| RMS itself has no specific setup requirements that would not be the same for the majority of applications using Terminal Services.
| Technical RMS setup assistance for terminal services is not available from the support desk; however our technicians may be available by appointment to answer any RMS/Terminal Services issues.
