RMS Configurator

The RMS Configurator is a small piece of software supplied by RMS, to maintain liasion between your RMS system and RMS. It is used to provide RMS upgrades, making RMS extremely easy to keep up to date. The Configurator also conducts some administrative functions ensuring your contact details and licence expiry details are up to date.

The Configurator streamlines contact beween each property and RMS and removes most of the manual operations needed in earlier RMS versions. It sits in your system tray, operating automatically and does not represent any security risk to your network or computer systems.

This warning will appear on all screens if the Configurator has not been running for more thna 48 hours. It appears more frequently the longer the Configurator has been idle to encourage operators to restart the Configurator.

There is a snooze function to prevent warnings coming up but inbuilt timing will cause the warning to re- appear until the Configurator is re-started. It is strongly recommended that the snooze button only be activated when waiting for the designated person at your property to re-start this function.

RMS Configurator Q & A

Q. What does the Configurator do?
A. The Configurator performs several functions. Most importantly it allows RMS to keep itself updated to the most appropriate version. It then can install new versions with ease.

Q. What RMS Components does the Configurator keep updated?
A. As of version 1.20 the Configurator will keep RMS and the iBackup modules updated (more will be added in the future). Any other module such as PABX, POS or Boom Gate Processors should be upgraded manually. This does not apply to RMS Online as it upgrades itself.

Q. I have multiple workstations. Where should I install the Configurator?
A. The Configurator only needs to be installed on one pc. This would usually be your server (if it has internet access) or one workstation that can access the internet and has RMS installed. You should not install the Configurator on to every computer.

Q. I do not have the internet available on any RMS workstation or server. Do I still need to have it installed?
A. Yes. The Configurator does not specifically require internet access therefore it would not be able to automatically keep your RMS version updated; however it does need to be running to maintain your RMS license.

Q. What RMS Version is required for the Configurator to work?
A. The RMS Configurator Requires that you have RMS Version 8.9.241 or later installed

Q. Do I have to have the Configurator running all the time?
A. It is advisable that you do run the Configurator at all times. It should not cause any issue whether you have the internet available or not.

Q. When will the Configurator download a new RMS Version?
A. RMS Versions are 'pushed out' whenever an upgrade is required. This would usually be because you have contacted RMS Support and they have identified that you require a new version. Major new releases will be made progressively available to all clients. There will be email newsletters an drelease notes sent to properties before the version is released

Q. I have multiple RMS databases on my SQL server. Can the Configurator keep each of them updated?
A. Yes, The Configurator has an option that allows it to monitor all RMS databases on your SQL server. In the tools – options menu you will find a tab called Options. Click on the option called Multi Property Configuration. You will need to restart the Configurator for this change to take effect.

Q. I use Windows Terminal Services. How should the Configurator be installed?
A. You only need to ensure that the Configurator is installed on the RMS application server. By Default it will automatically run for the user account that it is installed under. So each users session should not automatically load the Configurator.

Internet Connection Issues - Information for technicians
This information can be used when the Configurator is having problems communicating with the RMS servers and is indicated by 'Internet – Disconnected' on the Configurator screen.
RMS Support cannot assist with the configuration of your firewall software or proxy settings.

Port Blocking

The RMS Configurator communicates with the RMS Server on port 80.
This port must be open for outgoing communication
The RMS Configurator initiates all connection to the RMS server – never from the RMS server to the Configurator so you should not need to worry about incoming ports.

If you use an application based firewall like Norton Internet Security, McAfee Internet Security, Zone Alarm etc you will need to amend your application rules to always allow the RMS Configurator to access the internet.

Please note. We have identified on some occasions the application rule may be reset when there is an update to the RMS Configurator (new exe). Please ensure that the user is aware of how to correct this situation if it should occur.

Proxy Connections

The Configurator can also have issues communicating with the RMS Servers due to Proxy setting requirements.

You can load the details of your proxy server within the set up of the Configurator.
1.   Display the Configurator
2.   Select the tools menu followed by options
3.   Select the Connection TAB
Here you are given the ability to specify your Proxy Server settings
