RMS Backup to CD Writers
Previous  Top  Next

Windows XP users - please read notes below.
These directions are designed to be used by a competent IT professional. RMS cannot assist with the installation or setup of 3rd party software.
If you have installed a CD Writer/Re-Writer you will need to use specific software in conjunction with the RMS backup program to successfully burn your backup files on-the-fly.

Specifically, this software is referred to as Packet Writing Software and is usually bundled with the CD Burner.

Packet writing software allows you to simply copy files onto the CD by dragging and dropping them in Windows Explorer, without the need to use the actual CD Burning software that may have come with the Burner itself.

When using CD's for packet writing purposes you will need to format the CD First to ready it for burning. This only need be done once per CD.

If you are not using a re-writable CD you will find that eventually the disk will Fill to capacity. If you are using a Re-Writable CD, RMS will simply overwrite the previous backup with the new one.

You will still need to have one CD for each day of the week.

Typical examples of packet Writing Software are as follows -
1. Adaptec Direct CD (bundled with Adaptec EZ CD Creator) NOTE. Adaptec has recently been purchased by ROXIO, so the software may now be referred to as ROXIO EZ CD Creator. http://www.roxio.com

2. Nero InCD (bundled with Nero Burning ROM) - Good description available on-line - http://www.nero.com/en/incdinfo.htm

Once you have installed your Packet Writing Software, formatted a CD and tested it (copy a file in Windows Explorer and drop it to the Burner) you must set up RMS with the new destination drive to backup to.

From the Main Menu of RMS, go to SETUP then click on General Information.
Select the BACKUP TAB and change the Backup Drive Letter to your CD Burner's Drive letter (ie. E: )

Now, when you load the RMS Backup program, it will have changed the Backup Drive to be that in the General Information.

Simply click backup and proceed as usual.

DONE!

Windows XP Users
Windows XP comes with CD Burning software Built-in. This software does not replace the necessity for Packet Writing software as discussed above. At the time of writing this document the latest version of Nero InCD is compatible with Windows XP.
As a basic rule of thumb, it is necessary to Format your CD's before RMS can copy its backup files. This would only need to be done once for a re-writable CD or whenever the CD is Full for a non re-writable CD.
